(1) Like Athena in Greek mythology, Xuannu the Warrior Goddess (aka Jiutian Xuannu 九天玄女) in Chinese mythology is also known for her wisdom in devising war strategy and in mentoring heroes. In The Heavenly Sword, she gives the protagonist Tang Sai'er more than just wise counsel.
(2) Lan Caihe 藍釆和 is one of the Eight Immortals 八仙 that are worshipped by Taoists, and is an androgynous kid who loves to sing and dance. The sprite plays a pivotal role in Tang Sai'er earthly adventures.
